✦ Rainbow Obsidian is volcanic glass — formed when silica-rich lava cools so rapidly that crystals have no time to form, creating a naturally occurring amorphous solid. Its iridescent shimmer, known as schiller, is caused by the inclusion of magnetite nanoparticles arranged in thin layers within the glass — each layer refracting light at a slightly different wavelength, producing the rainbow effect through thin-film interference, the same optical phenomenon responsible for the colours in a soap bubble or an oil slick.
